Simone Montemurno
November 22 – December 28, 2013
Opening Reception Friday November 22, 7-10 PM
Simone Montemurno is a Los Angeles-based artist who makes paintings, sound recordings, and books. Her work is inspired by cultural artifacts one might encounter in a regional folk art museum, idiosyncratic private collection, house museum, or forgotten archive. Montemurno’s paintings are often exhibited with customized shelves, or incorporate borrowed library books, browsable records, and take-away ephemera. She has shown artwork and books at the Basilica Hudson (NY), Curtat Tunnel (Lausanne), Untitled Art Projects (LA), PØST (LA), Indianapolis MOCA (IN), and Creative Alliance (Baltimore). In 2012 she curated Ex Libris, an exhibition where artists and writers presented works comprised of materials borrowed from the Los Angeles Public Library. Montemurno was born in Manila, Philippines (1980), and attended CalArts (MFA 2011) and the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU (BFA 2002).
